The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026, the sole gateway for medical admissions in India, has plunged into an unprecedented crisis. What began as a highly competitive exam for over 22 lakh medical aspirants has transformed into a massive national and political scandal, leaving families in deep distress and thousands of students hitting the streets in anger.

How the Leak Happened & The NTA’s “Zero-Tolerance” Cancellation

India’s only entrance route, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET-UG) 2026, is in an unprecedented crisis.

What began as a fierce competition for more than 22,000 medical candidates has evolved into a major national and political scandal that has caused deep pain for families and sent thousands of students into the streets in anger.

How was the “Zero Tolerance” NTA leaked and subverted? NEET-UG 2026 exam was conducted on May 3, 2026 at 5,432 centers across India and 14 countries across the world. However, a few days before the exam, it was discovered that the question papers had been hacked, compromising the integrity of the exam.

Traces of “guess paper” on WhatsApp. The leak first came to light thanks to a chemistry professor in Shikhar, Rajasthan.

He reported that PDF files are being circulated on WhatsApp and Telegram under the guise of “speculative papers.” Analysis revealed that approximately 120 questions and specific answer sequences in the chemistry section were an exact match to the official exam copy.

At scale: Further investigation revealed that a document containing approximately 410 exam questions was in circulation on an encrypted messaging app from 15 days before May 3rd to one month prior to May 3rd.

Cancellation of exam: In the face of undeniable evidence that the exam was compromised, the National Testing Agency (NTA) officially canceled the NEET-UG 2026 exam on May 12, 2026.

Citing a “zero tolerance policy” for abuse, the NTA announced a mandatory nationwide re-examination scheduled for June 21, 2026.
